History of Gomel State Medical University

Gomel State Medical University was founded in 1990. The purpose of the establishment of the institution was to provide training for doctors and highly qualified specialists for the most affected by the Chernobyl disaster in the Gomel and Mogilev regions. The creation of the university was due to the urgent need for medical personnel in the Gomel and Mogilev regions, affected by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as well as the need to conduct research to study the medical consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and find ways to overcome them.

Faculties at Gomel State Medical University

The main faculty at the university is medicine. From the third year, students of the medical faculty undergo industrial practice, which contributes to the consolidation, deepening, improvement, systematization of the theoretical knowledge of the student, obtained in the course of training, in order to acquire practical skills that are necessary in the future for independent professional activity. The next faculty is medical diagnostic; it prepares personnel in the specialty «Medical diagnostic business» with the qualification of a «doctor». The term of study is 5 years. After completing the internship training and passing the qualification exam, graduates of the medical diagnostic faculty can work in the following positions: laboratory diagnostics doctor, radiation diagnostics doctor, ultrasound diagnostics doctor, and functional diagnostics doctor. In 2000, the Faculty of Training Specialists for Foreign Countries was opened (at present, the Faculty of Foreign Students).

Admission to Gomel State Medical University

For admission to the university, applicants pass a centralized test in chemistry and biology. University education is possible only after grade 11 or after graduating from medical college. To enter the university, you need to pass in biology, chemistry, Russian or Belarusian languages, have a high average score in the certificate.
