Azarenka started the tournament in Madrid with a victory

Victoria Azarenka, ranked 26th in the world rankings, won her first match at the WTA-1000 tournament in Madrid, Sputnik shares.

She defeated German tennis player Tatiana Maria (67th place in the ranking) with the score 6:3, 6:1. Azarenka's next opponent will be Spaniard Sarah Sorribes-Tormo, who occupies 55th place in the ranking.

The Belarusian tennis player also set a unique achievement at the WTA-1000 tournaments, becoming the first athlete to win 200 victories in such competitions since 2009. The second racket of the world from Belarus, Arina Sobolenko, will also perform at the tournament in Madrid, where she will meet with Polish tennis player Magda Lynette.

The Madrid Open is the first clay court tournament for tennis players this season, which will end on May 5. The prize fund of the tournament is about 8 million euros.
