Belarusian oncologists performed CAR-T therapy

Belarusian pediatric oncologists have performed innovative CAR-T therapy for two patients, belta.by reports.

CAR-T therapy is a treatment technology where the patient's own immune cells are taken from the patient, modified in the laboratory for the most effective fight against the tumor, multiplied and injected back into the patient.

"A chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) targeting the tumor-associated antigen of B-line leukemias and lymphomas has been developed in collaboration with the RNPC of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology and the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the NAS. Lymphocytes are returned to the recipient's body, where they detect tumor cells, recognize them due to the presence of a chimeric antigen receptor and destroy them, " said Dmitry Lazar, head of the Department of Medical Care for Mothers and Children of the Ministry of Health.

On the basis of the RNPC of Pediatric Oncology, Hematology and Immunology, a group of doctors of different specialties was created, which is engaged in the development of this therapy. Clinical testing of the method took place in the fall of 2020 and CAR-T therapy has already been performed in two patients.
