European Union calls for the release of Victor Babariko
The European Union has prepared a statement to the Belarusian authorities calling for the release of presidential candidate Viktor Babariko, reports tut.by.
The EU draws attention to the fact that the Belarusian authorities must ensure competitive conditions among potential candidates for the presidency of the Republic of Belarus and fair elections in the country. In particular, according to the European Union, the Belarusian authorities should release one of the candidates, Viktor Babariko, and his son Eduard. Potential candidates should not be restricted from participating in elections for political reasons. Victor and his son should be guaranteed compliance with the right for a lawyer and a fair investigation process.
Belarus has international obligations to ensure human rights and freedoms, which must be respected. The EU recommends abstaining from restricting any rights of presidential candidates.
