First national geopark will appear in Belarus

It will include the territory of two national parks: Braslav Lakes and Narochansky. There are more than 60 geological monuments there, the BSU website writes.

Also on this territory, there are traces of the last glacier that melted 14 thousand years ago. It left behind an unusual shape of hills, sand ridges, boulders, lake basins with a depth of more than 40 meters.

In order for the territory of the two parks to be included in the UNESCO geoparks network, scientists from BSU and the National Academy of Sciences are evaluating them. The territory will receive the status of a national geological park by 2025.

This will expand the tourism potential of the region and preserve geological monuments.

Today there is not a single natural territory in Belarus that has the status of a geopark. And there are about 170 of them in the world.
