How is waste used at landfills in Minsk?

The Minsk-News agency found out how waste is processed at the Minsk landfills. Recently we wrote that a new waste sorting plant is planned to be built in Minsk.

Rotting processes are going inside the hill of the landfill. Landfills with 20-25% of organic waste are equipped with a degassing system. There are 3 such landfills in Minsk.  Thanks to this system, landfill gas is extracted and burned to generate electricity. Thus, it is possible to prevent greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and obtain electricity.

Also, shrinkage is gradually occurring at the landfills. It lasts from 4 to 20 years. Until the shrinkage is completed, a landfills cannot be used for other purposes. After the process is over, the hills can be turned into slopes for skiing or used for new purposes.
