Ice hockey world championship may be moved from Minsk

For various reasons, this year two international championships are under threat in Belarus: hockey, athletics and chess, tut.by reports. What are the reasons for the postponement of the ice hockey world championship.

The Ice Hockey World Championship was supposed to be held in May 2021 in two cities at once: in Minsk and in Riga.

The ice hockey championship is under the threat of postponement due to the ongoing demonstrations in Minsk and other cities of Belarus for more than 3 months. The crackdown on peaceful protests could affect foreign guests who come to watch the championship, as well as team representatives. The organizing committee has not yet made a decision to change the venue of the competition, however, expressed its position that the safety of participants and spectators of the championship is in question.

The situation should be cleared up by the end of November 2020, when the reports of the observers who arrived in Belarus to collect information will be presented.
