New radioactive waste storage to be built in Belarus by 2032

A storage facility for radioactive waste from the Belarusian NPP will be finished by 2032. A site for it should be chosen in the next year and a half, Sputnik reported.

The special site for the storage of radioactive waste will be determined within a year and a half.

In February 2023, the Council of Ministers of Belarus adopted a strategy for radioactive waste management. According to this document, a waste storage facility should be constructed within 10 years from the launch of the Belarusian NPP's second power unit.

The territory will be determined within a year and a half. The regulation of requirements for it has already been drawn up. The terms of reference for the execution of all works are being developed now.

The territory near the Belarusian nuclear power plant and zones of radioactive contamination are now being considered as options.

Let us remind you that the second power unit of the Belarusian NPP is planned to be launched for commercial operation by the end of 2023.
