Will the procedure for acquiring Belarusian citizenship be simplified?

The deputies of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus are considering a proposal to simplify the procedure for acquiring Belarusian citizenship, reports tut.by.

At the spring session of the House of Representatives, the deputies are planning to consider amendments to the law on citizenship of the Republic of Belarus. Changes in the law relate to the procedure for acquiring Belarusian citizenship.

Among the proposals for consideration are:

1. To reduce the period of residence necessary for acquiring Belarusian citizenship to five years for foreigners who are getting higher education in Belarus;

2. To introduce benefits for foreigners who have got higher education and have been working in the Republic of Belarus for three years, as well as for foreigners who have been married to Belarusian citizens for three years and have children.

The House of Representatives claims that the purpose of these ammendments in the citizenship law is to attract foreign students to the country.
