An eco-friendly alternative to disposable cups
Scientists from the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus have developed biodegradable cups coated with polylactic acid (PLA), a material derived from lactic acid, BelTA reports.
Unlike polyethylene, PLA does not break down into microplastics and is fully biodegradable in nature.
The solution is economically viable: it uses a very thin coating layer, and paper is an easily accessible resource. The new product has passed initial safety tests and could also be used for other types of packaging, such as bags. The project was developed in collaboration with the Institute of Microbiology of the NAS of Belarus and Belarusian State University.
