Belarus withdraws from Aarhus Convention

The President of Belarus has signed a decree on the termination of participation in the Aarhus Convention on the Rights of Citizens in Environmental Matters. Belarus became a party to the convention on June 25, 1998, BELTA writes.

The reason for withdrawing from the convention is a biased attitude of the high command and pressure on a sovereign state in October 2021.

According to the President's press center, Belarus' withdrawal from the treaty will not entail the termination of the improvement of the national system of interaction between state authorities and the population in the field of environmental policy. Further work to ensure the realization of the rights of citizens (their associations) to receive information, participate in the decision-making process and access to justice in environmental matters will be continued within the framework of the legislation of Belarus.

Recently we wrote that BSU scientists have created maps of arid regions of the Belarusian Polesie.
