BSU scientists created maps of arid regions of the Belarusian Polesie
BSU scientists developed maps of the degree of vulnerability to droughts of soils of agricultural lands of the Belarusian Polesie. This will help to change the approach to agricultural activity in the southern region of Belarus in the near future, the BSU website writes. Read also how Belarus plans to increase the area of forests.
Over the past three decades, soil droughts have been manifested almost annually in the Belarusian Polesie region and have become more prolonged. The study showed that the soils of agricultural lands in 21 districts have a high degree of vulnerability to droughts. This reduces their bioproductive capacity.
Researchers have compiled maps of all arid regions where priority measures are needed to adapt crops to droughts and mitigate their negative consequences. Scientists have also developed recommendations to reduce the negative effects on agriculture.
The maps were used in the preparation of the strategy of adaptation of agriculture in Belarus to climate change. The Ministry of Agriculture of two regions of Belarus will also use the maps.
