Big Grodno and Grodno region Travel Guide: top 10 places to visit

Grodno city was first mentioned in chronicles in 1005. However, the official date of the foundation of the city is considered to be 1127. Grodno is the fifth largest city in Belarus in terms of population. According to the 2020 census, 359,600 people lived there.

In the middle of the XIII century, Grodno became a part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and in 1673 became its capital. Therefore, many monuments of architecture and culture of those times have been preserved in Grodno and its region. This is one of the most important historical and cultural centers of Belarus, which has preserved unique and oldest historical buildings.

The Grodno region stands out for its national and religious composition. Over 20% of the population are Poles. It is the only region of Belarus where the Roman Catholic Church dominates among believers. The largest cities of the Grodno region after Grodno are Lida, Slonim and Volkovysk.

We will guide you along the most pompous routes of Grodno and the Grodno region.

St Boris and Gleb Church in Grodno

Address: Grodno, Kalozha Street 6

Opening hours: from 7:00am to 10:00pm

The St Boris and Gleb Church was founded in the 1180s. It is one of the oldest preserved churches of Ancient Russia and a unique monument of Black Russian architecture. There is an opinion that the church was built at about the same time as the oldest Belarusian St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk, which we wrote about in the Vitebsk Guide.

In the XIX century, the pile under the southern wall of the church sagged, and it collapsed along with part of the western wall. Instead, wooden walls were placed, and the shore near the church was strengthened. Since the XII century, two walls have been preserved with unique unpainted masonry decorated with polished stones and majolica tiles. Also, the church has double walls: the inner layer has built-in votive pitchers. They improve acoustics and facilitate the construction.

Today St Boris and Gleb Church works as an Orthodox church. There are no excursions in the temple, you can visit it by yourself at any time.

The most valuable place of the cathedral is the main altar with a height of 21 meters. It is one of the highest altars in Europe. It is made of wood and tinted to look like marble. The composition includes more than 40 sculptures, columns, and frescoes.
