Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant

The storage facility for radioactive waste will be built in Belarus

The first stage of the storage of radioactive waste of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) will be built in Belarus by 2031, belta.by reports.

According to the head of the Radiation Safety Regulation Department of Gosatomnadzor Victoria Antonova, waste generation is an integral part of the technological process at any production facility.

"During the operation of the BelNPP, low - and medium-level waste will mainly be generated, with less than one percent of high-level waste. Storage of high-level waste is provided for throughout the entire life cycle of the Belarusian NPP. Low-and medium-level waste will be stored at the plant for 10 years, after which they will be moved to special storage facilities intended for their disposal," Antonova said.

The BelNPP project provides for the temporary storage of low-and medium-level waste at the nuclear power plant site itself for 10 years. The spent fuel assemblies will be sent to a special aging pool for ten years. After that, the fuel will be sent for processing to Russia.

"It is very important for us to ensure safety at all stages of spent fuel and radioactive waste management. We pay special attention to the perfect implementation of all design solutions. Our inspection carries out continuous supervision at the site, " Victoria Antonova stressed.

At the moment, there is a search for a site for the construction of the object.
